(second club in same facility is building N-scale layout) The club, founded in 1994, houses a permanent HO-scale layout and a movable N-scale modular layout, both currently under construction. The HO layout will eventually fill an area approximately 30'x100'. Phase One of the HO layout already encompasses over 900 linear feet of track including a classification and working hump yard and double-track mainline through the low-lands reverting to a single-track mainline through a dramatic mountain pass, culminating with a huge curved trestle above a mining town and several bridges over a deep gorge. Track in this section of the layout is nearly 500 scale feet above the valley floor with floor-to-ceiling scenery. Phase One will eventually have over 1500 feet of track. Phase Two, to be started in a few years, will add 2000 more feet of track as the mainline crosses the mountains to link up with a major coastal city. The layout is set approximately in the year 1960. There are currently 15-20 active members, all busily laying track, wiring, scenicing, and operating the layout.

Meetings: At present, BSME members are working on the railroad ever Thursday, from approximately 7pm 11pm. Business meetings are conducted at 8pm on the second Thursday of each month. Directions and a map available at http://www.bsme.org/visiting/directions.htm

Published in the May 1994 issue of Model Railroading magazine, K&W is a 26'x42' (1100 sq.ft.) HO scale layout with scenic features that span the four winds of the North American continent over many decades. A guest will find a[n] [ig]noble and most [ir]reverant management of the nation's largest and most progressive (spell that 'tallarant') railroad empire. So much so that all forms and sizes of steam (or even 'diesal', wink, wink) and roadnames are permissable and welcomed. (Little does the guest know that the Mighty K&W owns all!!!) About 85% sceniced, there are four independently controlled yards plus a fiddle yard. The entire layout recently was transformed by the addition of DiGitrak (and as welcomed news to the wonderful '94 NMRA Convention visitors, a in Sky Blue). When you visit, please bring your favorite locomotion and rolling stock; we'd be delighted to see it run. Keep in mind, DiGitrak can control non-DCC equiped locos. Oh yes, , but a hell of a long way from least: we have the best and most realistic ______ in any club in the United States, bar none! The visitor walk away having seen what she/he didn't see (or is it having it the other way around{?}) and enjoying that ______ eeemmensly. One should ask: "What did I see that I didn't see?" ...ahh, er, or should that be: "What did I not see that I saw?" You'll know it when you don't. Money back, we guarentee it! (Refund limited to the price of the FREE admission only!!)! Memberships open.

a.k.a. The "Third Sub Club".
Lynnwood, WA 98036
Phone: 425-673-0165
WWW: http://www.mullanpass.com/

The "THIRD SUB CLUB" is based out of Lynnwood, Washington (Seattle) and has a large clubhouse, "CREW LOUNGE" for visiting fans in the Seattle area, with a few bunks and a full bath. The lounge also has a video projector and lots of train vids. Down our historic spiral staircase, (from a B&O tower, but not yet installed) out of the crew lounge will be the 3rd Sub Club's model railroad layout now under construction... We are modelling the line west out of Helena all the way to Missoula, in N-scale. This lyout is intended to be a realistic depiction of the scenery and operations of a specific railroad in a specific era, so modellers who like to run stack trains with the Hogwarts Express steamer at the helm may be dissapointed! The highlights of the layout will of course be the mainline grade up Mullan Pass, which will include all of the scenic highlights in operational order, and although scaled down, the "selective compression" of the scenes is minimal, so the operations will feel realistically similar to running the real grade. The double deck layout will occupy a 20 x 30' room and the design is for an around the walls / penninsula style, so the operators walk around with their trains and have minimal sight of the rest of the layout. The decks will be connected with the main grade between Tobin and Blossburg, which means that trains will run with helpers just like the real railroad! Operators will run trains from crew change at either Helena or Missoula to the other end, and staging yards of off layout in another 8' x 15' room. Total layout area is 720 sq. feet. The track plan will be posted as soon as we have it scanned. The era of operations recreated on the club layout is mid-summer of 1994. This was the peak of mixed-paint MRL engines, and the 1st Blue paint scheme. So lots of trains might have SP or Suzy-Q, or Seaboard units in among the MRL blue units. It also pre-dates the BNSF merger so there are lots of "Cascade Green" engines, LMX, and cabless booster GEs, the Oakways, and it was the first summer of the new SD70MAC units on coal drags. Also the operations over the line were busy at the time. We have tons of videos and photos from that summer to base the models on too. Layout control is DCC with the NCE system installed. There will be radio control as well as tethered throttles. Eventually we will have signalling as well, but for starters the 3rd sub will be run with track warrants. The members gather for work or operating sessions every 1st and 3rd SATURDAY night, and also sometimes on other nights as well. As membership in this new club grows, we will adapt the schedules to suit the overall group's needs. Operating sessions will happen officially at least once monthly after the monthly meeting, and crew members from out of town are welcome to stay the night in the lounge. It will accomodate 3 or four adults, plus anyone who wishes to crash on the floor! This is a semi-private club. Membership OPEN to public upon application. Members are wanted. It is more fun to run trains with a bucnh of pals than by yourself, and construction goes fater that way too! Membership requires minimal dues, and the maintenance of at least ONE good running / era-specific locomotive - ON the layout, and an NCE (operators grade or better) throttle is reccomended. Membership includes voting rights, crew operations, group outings, and other cool stuff.

Meetings: The members gather for work or operating sessions every 1st and 3rd SATURDAY night, and also sometimes on other nights as well. Operating sessions will happen officially at least once monthly after the monthly meeting.
